TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION GUIDEEuro Profile Lock CylindersThe physical locking/un-locking operation of many locks is via a removable cylinder (or barrel). Locks with this facility are highly popular as they have three distinct advantages over other lock types:
The term "Euro Profile" refers to cylinders having the specific shape profile as shown in the adjacent image. Mortice locks designed to accept this type of cylinder are normally referred to as "Euro Profile Cylinder Locks". This guide will help in the selection of Euro Profile Cylinders with regard to function, size requirements and security considerations. CYLINDER FUNCTION:As mentioned above, Euro Profile Cylinders are available with different functions and it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the terminology used and to have an understanding of the general use of each. Single CylinderSometimes referred to as "half cylinders", Single Cylinders allow key operation from one side only and are often used for lockable service cupboard doors in commercial and industrial settings. They are also used for internal locking and unlocking of security doors where no external operation is required. Double CylinderDouble Cylinders allow for key operation both internally and externally and are recommended for entrance doors to residential properties when used as part of a high security lock package. As operation is by key to both sides they should NOT be used where doors require a means of escape unless the lock body has an over-riding escape function. Key & Thumbturn CylinderKey and Thumbturn Cylinders allow for external key operation with thumbturn operation internally and are highly specified for internal office doors and unglazed entrance doors. Some specialist thumbturn cylinders incorporate a clutch mechanism to allow external key access even when the thumbturn is being held by room occupants. Bathroom Privacy CylinderAn alternative to the more common privacy turn & release sets fitted to bathroom locks, a Bathroom Privacy Cylinder has thumbturn operation internally with coin operated emergency release externally and can be fitted to standard euro profile lock cases. Half Thumbturn CylinderHalf Thumbturn Cylinders are used for applications that require uncontrolled egress from one direction while preventing access from the opposite side when locked. Commonly used on escape doors in smaller commercial properties and often fitted in conjunction with a "break glass" dome cover. CYLINDER SIZE:Euro Profile Cylinders are predominantly fitted to locks that are morticed into the door edge. They therefore need to have a minimum length to accommodate both the door thickness and the thickness of any escutcheons or handle backplates. Our preferred method for determining correct cylinder length is by measuring outward from the lock centreline when fitted. This method works for both centrally fitted locks and locks that are fitted offset. For Double Cylinders and Key & Thumbturn Cylinders the overall cylinder measurement is divided into two - the external side and the internal side as measured from the lock centreline. Where locks are fitted centrally within the door thickness the measurement will normally be equal on both sides, this being half the door thickness plus the escutcheon/backplate thickness. The adjacent image shows a Key and Thumbturn cylinder with equal sides of 30mm. Where locks are fitted off-set within the door thickness the external and internal measurements will normally be unequal. Where this is the case it is important to note the off-set when ordering - e.g. 30mm Ext/40mm Int (for Double Cylinders) or 30mm Key/40mm Turn (for Key & Thumbturn Cylinders. Single Cylinders and Half Thumbturn Cylinders obviously require measurement to one side only. Once the minimum length has been determined you can select the most appropriate cylinder size from your preferred range. Note that standard cylinder sizes will rarely match your minimum size exactly and you may need to compromise certain aspects in favour of others - for example, not all sizes will be available in all finishes or all levels of security. SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS:The level of security offered by any door assembly is dependant on many factors including (but not limited to) the physical strength of the lock, door & frame construction, door furniture and, for key operated locks, the availability of additional keys. By their very nature, lock cylinders are vulnerable to both physical attack and, for certain cylinder types, the unauthorised duplication of keys. Cylinders should therefore be selected with regard to their resistance to such risks and the degree of security required. BS EN1303:2015BS EN 1303:2015 is the European Standard which establishes assessment and test criteria for a lock cylinder to quantify its resistance to physical attack, durability and key security. BS EN 1303:2015 classifies lock cylinders using an 8 digit coding system. Features assessed include durability, fire resistance, key related security and attack resistance. The resulting 8 digit code can be used to directly compare the performance of one cylinder range against another. Cylinders meeting the highest grades for attack resistance (Grade 2) and key security (Grade 6) will normally be suitable for use on complete door sets to PAS 24. TS 007:2014 + A1:2015TS 007 is a technical specification for lock cylinders developed by the industry in response to growing concerns that homes are under threat from burglary attacks due to readily available information on the internet. If external doors and locks comply with the latest security standards (PAS24 for doors and BS3621 for locks) then they will already offer cylinder protection. However, the majority of existing domestic doors do not comply and TS 007 provides the means to upgrade them to resist cylinder attack. The TS 007 standard incorporates the use of a Kitemark symbol and star ratings that range from one to three stars. TS 007 is designed as a three star solution. Security can be achieved by either a combination of a cylinder (marked with one star) and security door furniture such as a strengthened door handle set (marked with two stars), or a “super cylinder” (marked with three stars) that successfully resists snap attack. In both cases, the same degrees of resistance against attack will be provided. Recommended for all external doors where both physical security and key security are paramount. KEYING OPTIONS:Keyed to DifferUnless stated otherwise, our lock cylinders are supplied "Keyed to Differ", whereby each cylinder is operated by it's own individual keys. Depending on the range chosen, cylinders will be supplied with a quantity of 2 or 3 keys. Additional keys are available to order. Keyed Alike (to Pass)All of our cylinders are available "Keyed Alike", whereby groups of cylinders are operated by the same key. This is a very popular choice for multiple external doors, for example. Groups can be a mix of cylinder types (single, double etc) and can contain any quantity of cylinders. Note, though, that cylinders within a group must be from the same cylinder range. Our "Keyed Alike" cylinders are supplied with a quantity of 3 keys per group with additional keys available to order. Our "Keyed Alike" cylinders are available to special order only - please contact us for further details and prices etc. Master KeyedThe term "Master Keying" refers to a mechanical locking system whereby multiple different locks are operable by a "Master Key" in addition to their individual "Servant Keys" (or "differ" keys). "Master Key" systems are used to provide or limit access to different locked areas within a building by incorporating a key distribution hierarchy. By increasing the number of tiers within the system, access becomes further compartmentalised with suited keys. For instance, a large system may have a Great-Grand Master Key on the top tier with access to all lock systems below it. As you go down the tiers (Grand Master Key, Master Key, Sub-Master Key) access becomes more limited, ending with a differ key which can access it's individual lock(s) only. Our "Master Keyed" cylinders are available to special order only - please contact us for further details and prices.
